Bus route under threat

29/04/2008 3:36:05 PM
A PLAN to terminate a Bella Vista bus route would severely affect the daily lives of many residents.

The proposal is part of an overhaul of the Hillsbus network and timetable.

At least 120 commuters have said they are unhappy.

Nick Agapides has been commuting to the CBD for work every day since 1999 on Hillsbus route 613.

The route has three bus runs in the morning and three at night.

Mr Agapides said the buses were "generally chock-a-block" with city workers, many standing particuarly in the morning.

He said Hillsbus planned to amalgamate the route 613 bus with route 614 which serves Crestwood and Winston Hills would "disadvantage" many people.

"We know it will add at least an hour to the trip," Mr Agapides said.

"If you make me walk an extra 15 minutes to the bus stop, I'm away from my family another half hour, on top of three hours on the bus.

"And we can't afford to drive, because of the cost of parking and petrol."

Ironically, Mr Agapides works for the Environment Department, specialising in air quality management.

He said such a change would add to air pollution.

"The 613 has three services and the 614 has five, but I doubt they'll keep all eight services going," he said.

"The buses are already filled to standing room, so people will just get in their car. And what does that solve?"

Mr Agapides has collected 120 signatures on a petition supporting the continuation of the service.

He said he felt he and his fellow commuters had not been properly consulted.

"When governments are planning these things, come and talk to the people before you put pen to paper," he said.

"Survey us, and show you're interested.

"I don't know how they conjured up these changes without good quality data."
