Business disruption claim disputed

CASTLE Hill MP Michael Richardson has been accused by the Mayor of Baulkham Hills of ``the usual [political] beat-up'' for criticising the affect of construction of the Eastern Ring Road on Terminus Street business.

``You can't expect life to go on as normal in the middle of a multi-million-dollar construction site which has been adversely affected by consistent rain this year,'' Cr Sonya Phillips said.

``Regrettably, this is so predictable of Mr Richardson he's said nothing positive about this council, despite us progressing an issue that the then Liberal-controlled council had on the agenda for 15 years.''

Mr Richardson concluded ``the news is almost uniformly bad''after receiving 24 responses to 60 surveys he sent out to businesses in Terminus Street.

``Ninety-six per cent of respondents said customers/patients had complained to them about lack of parking, and 75 per cent have had staff complaining as well.''

Sixty per cent of respondents have had trouble with deliveries, with more than two-thirds claiming construction had affected their profits, the state MP said.

Lack of parking wasn't the only problem. He said construction noise and unsightly safety fencing was also driving people away.

Cr Phillips said the Terminus Street Community Liaison Group representing property owners, businesses, strata managers, residents and council was set up to provide information and problem-resolution for the project.

``This group meets on a regular basis and has not been raising these types of concern, even as recently as their last meeting on Tuesday [June 17]. Mr Richardson himself at council's traffic committee meeting the day before did not raise any of these issues,''she said.

``In addition, council's project staff have not received this type of adverse feedback through our web complaint system or our 24-hour telephone hotlines.

``Frankly, we are surprised at the claims and urge any dissatisfied business to contact a member of their liaison group.''
