AFTER numerous delays, 20 firefighters have now moved into a new fire station at
Castle Hill.
The move to the new facility, close to the corner of Old Northern and Hastings roads, was delayed as the land had no access to sewerage and was unsuitable for stormwater drainage.
Baulkham Hills MP and councillor Ray Williams said the delay could have been avoided if the State Government had asked Baulkham Hills Council about the site amenities.
NSW Fire Brigades zone commander Michael Morris said the station had relocated to cater for existing and future population growth.
``We determined where the most appropriate location was, based on response times and travel distances,'' Mr Morris said.
Cr Williams said ongoing concerns about the safety of vehicles leaving the station existed, due to a blind spot only metres away from the Dural intersection.
The State Government has since allocated $750,000 in next year's budget for new traffic lights to be installed at the intersection early in 2009.
The lights will turn red when a fire engine leaves the driveway, either to turn left towards Dural or travel over the lowered traffic island to turn right towards Castle Hill.
Emergency Services Minister Nathan Rees said excavations had also been made at the street frontage to improve visibility for motorists and fire engine drivers.
``Warning signs and flashing lights have been erected on both approaches to the fire station in order to warn motorists when a fire engine is responding,'' Mr Rees said.
The station also received $535,000 from the budget for building improvements and a new fire engine.
