Sad little faces inspire news man's visit

A FAMILIAR face turned up to class at Carlingford West Public School last week.

Mark Ferguson, Channel Nine news anchor, visited the school to donate books and share his experience as a journalist with year five and six pupils.

He said he wanted to visit the school which was partially destroyed by a fire on May 26 after seeing footage of students arriving at school the day after the fire.

``It was so sad to see the looks on their little faces when they arrived that day,'' Mr Ferguson said.

He answered questions from pupils about his career; making mistakes on air; the biggest stories he has covered and whether he wears shorts underneath the desk.

``No, but I wear jeans sometimes,'' Mr Ferguson said.

School principal Kevin Gerard said the fire destroyed the school's original building, which was built in 1962.

The building housed seven classrooms and a community language room.

Two nearby demountables, which were damaged by the blaze, also had to be demolished.

Classes were moved to the hall, library and other classrooms.

``The fire was during education week and a lot of the work, which the children had prepared to show their parents, was lost,'' Mr Gerard said.

``But the support we received from the community was wonderful.

``Book suppliers offered us free maths text books and the Lions club bought us carpet to put on the floor in the hall.''

Local schools also donated money to replace students' possessions that were lost in the fire.

The school's new building is expected to be completed in about 12 months.

``It will be rebuilt with 2009 specifications and will also allow us to re-orient the site with our new hall.''
