HORNSBY Softball Association's under19s women's team are still on a high after winning the under19s Women's State Championships the club's first win for the under19s in 13 years.
The competition was held at Blacktown Olympic Park recently and it attracted the best players from across the state.
The Hornsby team made up of players from The Hills area had a tough fight on their hands over the two-day competition.
They played Manly Warringah in the semi-finals and won 3-0 to advance to the final against defending champions North Shore, where they won 1-0.
Coach Jim Smith was overwhelmed by the girls' achievement.
``It was a very intense tournament to win it is just fantastic,'' he said.
``They played unbelievably well and they were all up against experienced players. I couldn't believe their faces when we won.''
The Hornsby under19s team had a big improvement since last year's competition where they placed eighth.
``I coached last year and I wanted to do better this year. We knew we were good but didn't know we were that good!''
From the tournament, a NSW team will be selected to play at the national championships on January. Smith said he expects a few players to be selected.
New president of the club Peter Black said the team's win was well-deserved. ``It's a reflection of the work put in by Paul, who's put in 13 years of solid effort,'' he said.
