Titleholder thirsty for more Kick-boxer aims for win

HE PROUDLY holds two NSW titles, two Australian titles, a South Pacific, Commonwealth and Intercontinental title and three world titles but heavyweight Muay Thai kick-boxer Steve McKinnon is thirsty for more.

McKinnon, 31, of Baulkham Hills, leaves for Jamaica on Sunday to chase a fourth world title at the World Boxing Council Muay Thai world title.

``I have won three other world titles in different federations but you are not a world champion until you have all four there's one to go and I want that one,'' McKinnon said.

The match is on Friday, June 20, and McKinnon's confidence is soaring. He aims to make his presence felt against his opponent, the top-ranked Ashwin Balrak of Holland.

``I am in the best shape I have ever been in my life,'' he said.

``I'm at the peak of my career and in fine form so things are looking good.''

Since he was four, McKinnon was eager to get into fighting in sport.

His dad taught him karate and at 13 he decided to make the transition into Muay Thai kick-boxing.

``I saw it as more of a realistic sport I loved it then and I still love it now,'' he said.

He remembers his first achievement, a NSW title at 18.

``That was my first major highlight in the sport and it has just grown from there. Of course I am very proud of my achievements.''

McKinnon admits he isn't too far off hanging up the gloves, but he isn't about to give up just yet.

``I still have a lot left in me but when it does come time to retire I want to get

out on top,'' he said.

``I will know when it's time.''

He said before every fight, he kept relaxed by meditating.

``It's all about channelling your energy.''

The dedicated professional has

a massive training schedule twice a day, six days a week, at Bulldog Gym in Castle Hill which is owned by his brother Stuart who is a world champion and now retired.

McKinnon is coached by his brother and Nick Stone.

``I love the sport I love that I can keep improving and learning,'' he said. ``I teach as well and I get right into the techniques of it all.''
