We're watching you, child porn cop warns

A senior Queensland police detective says the arrests of a further 26 people on child pornography charges sends a clear signal to potential users: we are watching you.

The latest arrests , made in the past month as a result of one of the largest child pornography investigations the state has ever seen, bring to 66 the number of Queenslanders nabbed under Operation Golf Cortex - the local arm of an international sting.

Four teachers and five blue card holders were among those arrested on a total of 235 charges relating to the possession and distribution of more than two million child abuse images.

Male pensioners, gardeners, IT consultants, architects, nurses, hairdressers and taxi drivers ranging in age from 30 to 68, were also caught in the net.

Detective Superintendent Peter Crawford, from Queensland's Child Safety and Sexual Crime group, said the material seized during the three month operation depicted the abuse and exploitation of babies as young as 12 months.

Mr Crawford said the most recent 26 arrests were made after police went public with their probe and demonstrated that people were not heeding the warnings.

"People seem to be of the view that child pornography is like adult pornography, which is not illegal in many aspects," Mr Crawford said.

"I'm here to tell you that child pornography is not like adult pornography; it is illegal, it's illegal for a reason and that reason is that it's images of children that are being sexually exploited.

"That is not acceptable in our community, people need to realise that."

Operation Golf Cortex was launched in April following a mass swoop on users of a European-based internet site which featured child porn.

The international sting involved 170 countries.

Mr Crawford said while the Queensland arm had concluded, probes in other states were still underway and separate local investigations continued.

"We have approximately 29 investigations where we're doing some further forensic analysis, we've conducted the search warrants and seized the material, and I expect there'll be some further charges to flow from those examinations," he said.

In the first phase of the operation, a 55-year-old Queensland teacher was charged with the alleged rape of an underage girl.

She was one of four Australian children rescued during the course of the inquiry.

Mr Crawford said investigations since then had not uncovered any other instances where Queensland children had been directly involved.

Queensland Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson commended everyone involved in Golf Cortex's success.

"The operation once again highlights the effectiveness of law enforcement agencies working together to identify those who seek to abuse and exploit children," Mr Atkinson said.

"Our officers have worked diligently and quickly, underscoring our absolute and unequivocal position of zero tolerance for those who access and download child exploitation material.

"It has been our first priority to target those people who may work with children and, as a result, four teachers and five blue card holders are among the 66 arrested in Queensland. Two of the teachers were charged by the AFP, and the remainder by QPS."
